Naminori Wave Tee

波乗り — Naminori. Wave riding, the old-fashioned way.

Edo, sometime in the 1830s. Step through the torii at the edge of the shrine grounds and the sea is already climbing the sky: a monster wave curling over with claw-like foam, Mt Fuji sitting small and calm in the distance, clouds rolling in off the coast. Two hawks ride the wind high above the crest with their wings spread wide. In Japan the 鷹 (taka) is a lucky sign. Dream of Fuji and a hawk on New Year's night and the year ahead is yours.

The whole scene is drawn in a single colour in a hand-inked woodcut line style and framed by a hand-drawn torii gate, with 波乗り brushed underneath. White ink on dark shirts and deep indigo on light ones keep it crisp and easy to wear. Available in a range of colours. For surfers, ukiyo-e fans, and anyone who has ever stood on the shore and waited for the big one.
